Alfaxan safety in cats

Acute tolerance to overdose of Alfaxan has been demonstrated up to five times the recommended dose of 5 mg/kg in the cat (25 mg/kg), with animals requiring only ventilation to allow recovery with residual effects.19

Repeated overdosing with Alfaxan (five times the recommended dose) every 48 hours for three doses in cats caused no adverse effects.25

Alfaxan can be used safely in kittens from four weeks of age59 (Alfaxan has not been evaluated in kittens less than four weeks of age).

Alfaxan does not cause tissue irritation after peri-vascular, subcutaneous or intramuscular injection.182134 (Alfaxan is licensed for intravenous administration only and these studies simply indicate that no adverse event should be expected if it is administered by any other route accidentally).

Alfaxan safety in dogs

Acute tolerance to overdose of Alfaxan has been demonstrated up to five times the recommended dose of 2 mg/kg in the cat (i.e. 10 mg/kg), with animals requiring only ventilation to allow recovery with residual effects.20

Repeated overdosing with Alfaxan (five times the recommended dose) every 48 hours for three doses in dogs caused no adverse effects.22

Alfaxan can be used safely in puppies from 10 weeks of age59 and prior to canine caesarean section36 (Alfaxan has not been evaluated in puppies less than 10 weeks of age).

Research has demonstrated Alfaxan can be used safely in sighthounds.27
